Here, we dig into a social media study released by PEW Research Center in 2015 to pinpoint some key statistics and facts that could help you shape—or revise—your social media marketing plan and build your business as a result.

  • 71%: of all internet users use Facebook

 

  • 56%: For the first time, more than half of all online adults 65 and older (56%) use Facebook. This represents 31% of all seniors.

 

  • 52%: of online adults now use two or more social media sites, a significant increase from 2013, when it stood at 42% of internet users. This signals a trend towards multi-platform use.

 

  • 50%: For the first time, the share of internet users with college educations using LinkedIn reached 50%.

 

  • 53%: For the first time, roughly half of internet-using young adults ages 18-29 use Instagram. And half of all Instagram users (49%) use the site daily.

 

  • 42%: Women dominate Pinterest: 42% of online women now use the platform, compared with 13% of online men.

 

  • 0%: Facebook continues to be the most popular social media site by far but it experienced no growth in users from 2013 to 2014, revealing a stalling of interest in this behemoth social platform.

 

  • 1pm: Posting at 1pm garners the most shares on Facebook; posting at 3pm gains the most clicks. Tip: Use the tool Fanpage Karma to find the optimal time tailored to your audience.

 

  • 12pm: Tweeting at 12pm and 6pm render the highest click-through rate (CTR) on Twitter. Best days to tweet are Wednesdays through Sundays but Twitter engagement for brands is 17% higher on the weekend.

 

  • 7am-8am: On LinkedIn, the best times to post are 7-8am and 5-6pm. Best days to post on this business-focused channel are Tuesday through Thursday.
